Taught drawing, Cooper Institute. In business for himself as wood engraver, 1865-1870. Head of art department of Scribner’s Monthly, 1870-1881, when it became The Century, then art director The Century and Saint Nicholas.
Identified with many important art movements in this country for past 25 years.
