(Light, Laugh, and Human Folly is a collection of novellas...)
Light, Laugh, and Human Folly is a collection of novellas centered around anti-heroes living in a society that makes a straight road to success impossible. Alexander Belyaev's reality-set stories with a touch of science fiction are chillingly close to home. They present the listener with scenarios that are very plausible and easy to imagine witnessing in today's world. Instead of introducing a traditional hero, who comes and saves the world, Belyaev centers his narrative around individuals who are not only far from heroic but are decidedly unlikable at times.

Actor critic journalist lawyer writer
Alexander Belyaev was born on March 16, 1884 in Smolensk to the family of Roman Petrovich Belyaev and Natalya Fyodorovna Belyaeva. His father was an Orthodox priest.
From an early age, Belyaev was attracted to music: he independently learned to play the violin and the piano, he loved to play music for hours. He was studying Esperanto. Belyaev liked to conduct natural science experiments.
Belyaev’s father wanted to see the son as the continuer of family’s priest business and sent him to Smolensk School of Theology in 1894. After graduation in 1895, Belyaev entered the Smolensk Theological Seminary. In 1901 he graduated from it but didn’t become a priest but on the contrary, he became a die-hard atheist.
Contrary to his father’s will in 1902 Belyaev entered the Demidov Legal Lyceum at Yaroslavl. In January 1905 classes at the Lyceum were discontinued because of the All-Russian student strike. In June 1906 the classes were restored and Belyaev continued studying. He graduated in 1909.
In August 1901, Belyaev signed a contract with the Smolensk Folk House Theater and until March 1902 he played in performances. In June 1909, Belyaev graduated from the Lyceum, after which he returned to Smolensk and began practicing law. In 1909 he received the position of an Assistant Attorney, then in 1914 an Attorney and soon became known as a good lawyer. At the same time, Belyaev had a side job as a journalist in the Smolensky Vestnik newspaper. The first publications by Alexander Belyaev were approved in 1906 and since 1911 their collaboration became regular. He wrote reports on theatrical and musical premieres, critical notes, essays on social and literary life, which were published under the pseudonym "- B-la-f -" or signed "B."
In 1915, Belyaev fell ill with bone vertebral tuberculosis, complicated by the paralysis of the legs. A severe illness chained him to bed for six years, three of which he was in a plaster corset. Belyaev moved to Rostov-on-Don, where he collaborated with the Rostov newspaper Priazovsky Krai and published his first science fiction story Berlin in 1925. In search of specialists who could help him, Belyaev with his mother and the old nanny moved to Yalta. There, in the hospital, he began to write poetry. In the years 1918-1920, he collaborates with the White Guard newspapers in Yalta. He returned to work having managed to partially recover from the disease in 1922. Belyaev became the head of the school-colony, then he was appointed to the post of inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department, later he had to leave to work as a librarian. Life in Yalta was very hard and in 1923 Belyaev with his family moved to Moscow, where he got a job as a legal adviser.
In 1924 in Moscow, Belyaev began a serious literary activity. His science fiction stories were published mostly in magazines. In 1924 the newspaper Gudok publishes the story The Head Of Professor Dowell. Belyaev lived in Moscow until 1928 and during this time he wrote several novels. They were published not only under his own name, but also under the pseudonyms A. Rom and Arbel.
In 1928 Belyaev and his family moved to Leningrad. In January 1932 they moved from Leningrad to the suburb town of Pushkin. At that period of time science fiction was considered inconsistent to the socialist system and Belyaev‘s works were not accepted at publishing houses. In 1935, Belyaev became a permanent employee of the Vokrug Sveta magazine, with which he had worked intensively for eight years. In 1935 his illness worsens, and he again spends almost three years chained to bed in plaster. At the beginning of 1938, after eleven years of intensive cooperation Belyaev left the Vokrug Sveta magazine.
The town of Pushkin, where Belyaev lived with his family during his last years was occupied by the Germans on September 17-19, 1941 and Belyaev died of hunger aged 57. Most sources indicate the date of his death as January 6, 1942.
