In 1949 Alexei Dementievich Shmarinov passed the senior class entrance exams in Moscow School of Arts, later on he finished it with excellent profile. Then he entered and successfully finished Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov (1952-1958). He began his professional career in 1955.
In 1960th Alexei Dementievich Shmarinov's works were well regarded by professional society, especially his series of monumental graphic paintings "Kamchatka", and the following work "Russian heroes in ХIII–ХV centuries" (1968-1969) is generally considered as a classical example of Russian graphic painting school. Russian history is a significant part of his creations. The topic of medieval Russian history is vividly noticeable in following pictures: "Zadonschina" (1977-1978), "Kulikovo Field" (1978-1979), "The Battle of Kulikovo" (1979-1980) and many others.
Alexei Dementievich designed and created an edition of historical books with graphic works entitled "The stories from soldierly tales and chronicles of medieval period" ("The one with sword", "Kulikovo field", "Heroic Russia"). Shmarinov’s publicistic graphics "Save our Homeland"(1982-1984) had found a broad resonance in Russia and abroad. He had illustrated Rustavelli’s epic poem "Vityaz in tiger’s skin" which is a classic example of Georgian literature and Prishvin’s "The forest eavesdrop". During his artistic career Shmarinov created more than 160 paintings, which were demonstrated in vaious major exhibitions. Shmarinov’s works are included in prestigious expositions of State Russsian Museum, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, The Tretyakov Gallery and in foreign collections in France, the USA, Austria, Japan, Italy, Normay and Germany.
Alexei Dementievich Shmarinov is the director of academic graphics workshop in Moscow. As a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts he supervises N.V. Tomsky Academic Lyceum of Fine Arts.
Alexei Dementievich is the supporter of conserwative left-wing views.
Smarinov’s main hobies are hunting and hunting dogs. His Scotch and Irish setters had some achievements in hunting contests.
