Alexey Ivanov graduated from the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy (1774) and stayed there as an educator.
In 1777 Alexey Ivanov went into the monkery Conventual prior of the Moscow Zaikonospassky Monastery (since 1786). He was a Bishop of Kolomna and Tula (1788-1799), Voronezh and Cherkassy (April-October 1799). Alexey Ivanov translated Avl Gellius’s "Attic Nights" (1787) and Tertullian’s "Protection of Christians against the Gentiles" (1802) from Latin.
Alexey Ivanov was a strict ruler, demanding. All members of the Consistory, whose complaints on the bishop to the Synod were the reason for his transfer from Voronezh, were dismissed by Athanasius upon his arrival in Voronezh.
