Background
Alexey Gavrilovich Volkov was born on July 1, 1780, in the Russian Federation. There are no private facts about Alexei Gavrilovich's parents and early childhood. There is only an assumption that he was the son of Gavrila Grigoryevich Volkov, the younger brother of the famous artist of the XVIII century Fedor Grigoryevich Volkov.
Education
Alexey Gavrilovich studied at the Academic Gymnasium, being in it on "state support", and graduated with the title of the translator in 1797. Then he was seconded to academic professor Tovius Lovits to improve his knowledge in the field of chemistry.
Career
At the end of 1803, Alexey Gavrilovich received the post of associate chemistry. In 1803-1805 made a scientific expedition to Poland, Belarus, and Finland; in 1804-1808 he was published in the Technological Journal. In 1809 he retired.
The first traces of Volkov’s literature are the collection of poems Minutes of Muses prepared by him in 1799 together with V.V. Popugaev for publication. As a man and a poet, he enjoyed exceptional respect in society. A large selection of his poems, mostly anacreontic, was printed.
Since 1804, perhaps in connection with the intensified studies in science, Alexey Gavrilovich stopped participating in the work of the Society. In 1812 he published a collection of poems, The Harp of the Verse. Volkov’s bold experiments in the field of poetic vocabulary, rhythm, and stanza are not always combined with a level of proficiency in verse technique. On the whole, the collection bears traces of both bright and original talent, and the mental ill-health of its author, which was reflected in particular in numerous author's applications.
