Alexey Ivanovich graduated from Saint Petersburg Real School in 1912, Higher Agricultural Courses in 1913, Oranienbaum Ensign School in 1915, courses "Vystrel" in 1930, Frunze Military Academy in 1940.
Alexey Ivanovich was a member of the First World War, the Russian Civil War and the Second World War. He joined the Red Army in 1918. He commanded a platoon, battalion, regiment. From 1929 to 1932, he was a tactics lecturer at Ulyanovsk Military School and from 1932 to 1941, at Lenin Military Academy and Frunze Military Academy.
At the beginning of the Second World War, Alexey Ivanovich formed the 12th militia division of Sverdlovsk District in Moscow. He was the Chief of Staff of the 307th Rifle Division in the battles near Moscow. He became the commander of the 1st Infantry Division on February 20, 1942, which became part of the 63rd Army and defended along the Eastern bank of Don River from Pavlovsk to the village of Monastyrshchina. They held Osetrovsky bridgehead on the West riverbank. As a part of the 1st Guards Army the division broke through the enemy defenses and went on the offensive according to the plan of Operation "Little Saturn" of 1942 on December 16, 1942. On December 31, 1942, the division was transformed into the 58th Guards Rifle Division.
Alexey Ivanovich was appointed the Deputy Commander of the 1st Guards Army on January 14, 1943. From June 9,1943, till the end of the Second World War, he was the commander of the 33rd Rifle Corps. He worked as a senior instructor at Voroshilov Military Academy from 1946 to1947, head of Tula Suvorov Military School from 1947 to 1950.
Alexey Ivanovich Semyonov was awarded the title of Honorary Commander of the British Military Division and Knight of the Higher Order of the British Empire by English King George VI on January 19, 1944, for the battles on the Don. He took part in the liberation of Ukraine, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Austria.
