Lyric poems are musical and easily memorized because of the strict regularity of their rhythm, rhyme, and composition in stanzas. Passages learned in early years can always be recalled with pleasure. It is generally acknowledged that the metric form of versification is hard to achieve, especially when true rhymes are used. The English language, unlike Italian, French or Russian, is not readily adaptable to scansion mainly on account of its irregular word stresses and its loss of inflections. This collection of poems displays the author's attempt to meet the challenge of applying the English language to pleasantly varied lyric forms. In taking advantage of its rich vocabulary, he followed his natural inclination toward the expression of thoughts and sentiments with simplicity, realism, and fidelity to life. Some of the poems exemplify the touch of sincerity and directness commonly characteristic of such poets as Pushkin and Lermontov.
