Entered Royal Navy, 1861. Lieutenant 1870; Commander, 1883. Retired Captain 1895.
Served in “Challenger” Scientific Expedition (Albert medal 2nd class for saving life). Soudan Expedition, 1884, in command of “Myrmidon” (medal and thanks of Admiralty). And whilst in charge of Marine Survey of India piloted the war flotilla under fire to Mandalay and Bhamo, 1885 (specially mentioned in despatches, Burma medal and h.S.O.).
Nine years in command of surveying vessels. Last service, His (or Her) Majesty Coastguard at Cowes. Created Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1887.
Recnrations: billiards, golf. Interested in collections of corals, and in meteorology and astronomy. Royal Navy,Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, F.R.Met.Soc., retired naval officer.
Fellow of the Zoological Society.
