A graduate of St. Mary’s College, Mr. Coffey was trained in architecture while employed in a number of offices.
He was associated with the late F. H. Martens. In practice after 1914 in association with Mr. Rist he was connected with the planning and supervision of a number of public buildings in the Bay region, while in more recent years he specialized in hospital work. Of his notable achievements in that field of design should be mentioned the Southern Pacific Harkness Memorial Hospital, additions to the St. Francis Hospital, and at the time of his death was architect of the new Cancer Unit and the Psychopathic Building of the City Hospital group.
Mr. Coffey also served for a time as City Architect of San Francisco and in that position designed a number of schools.
