As an example of the use of the above table, we shall roughly determine the price and weight of a 100-kilowatt generator, running at 400 revolutions per minute (mounted on bed-plate, complete with pulley)., Here, n wa 8-.----= 250, and revolutions per minute by reference to the table we find that the approximate price would be £420, and the weight 128 cwt., or 6-4 tons. If supplied for direct driving, with only one bearing and no bed-plate, the price would be about £370 (about 12 per cent. less than £420), and the weight about 100 cwt., or 5 tons. The weight of the armature is from 20 to 30 per cent. of the total weight of the machine, while its cost is about half the total cost of the machine. Examples. 1. Find approximately the diameter of the thickest part of the shaft of a 600-kilowatt generator designed for a speed of 55 revolutions per minute. 2. The armature core of a 14-pole generator has a diameter of 100 inches. Find approximately the radial depth of the core stampings. 3. A 75-kilowatt dynamo designed for a speed of 395 revolutions per minute has an armature whose diameter is 29 inches, and whose core length is 12£ inches. Find its output coefficient. 4. HAY, Alfred was born in of Scotch parents near Warsaw, Russian Poland.
School education received at one of the Warsaw “ Gymnasia.” Was apprenticed to a Glasgow firm of electrical engineers—Messrs. M‘Whirter, Ferguson, and Company, 1884. At the same time attended evening classes at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College (at that time College of Science and Art), gaining a number of certificates and prizes.
On completing a threeyears’ apprenticeship, entered the University of Edinburgh, and, obtaining 1st class honours in all the subjects, graduated Bachelor of Science 1891. Doctor of Science.
After that went to London, and for two terms studied electro-technology under late Professor Ayrton at Central Technical College. Demonstrator in Electrical Engineering at the University College, Nottingham, 1892. Lecturer on Electro-Technics at University College, Liverpool, 1896-1901.
Graduated Doctor of Science 1901. Professor of Electro-Technology, Royal Indian Engineering College, Cooper’s Hill, Staines, 1901-1904. Head of Physics and Electrical Engineering Department, Hackney Technical Institute, London, 1904-1908.
