Alfred Neal was born on June 23, 1912, in Kentfield, California, the United States. Neal got early exposure to free-enterprise realities when he was 10 years old and began delivering milk, using a pony and a cart, to other families in his hometown of Kentfield.

In 1943 Neal joined the Office of Price Administration in Washington, D.C., as an economist. In 1946 he joined the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston as director of research and eventually became the first vice president, a post he left in 1956 for the nonprofit Committee for Economic Development, where he was president and a member of the board of trustees for twenty years. The committee’s goal was to encourage worldwide economic progress.
Neal con¬tributed writings to several books and wrote two of his own: Industrial Concentration and Price Inflexibility and Business Power and Public Policy.
