Alfred H. Piquenard was born in France.
While little is known of his life and career in the U. S., his most important works were two state capitals in the mid-west. In the competition tor the new Capitol of Iowa, he submitted a design in the French Renaissance style which won him first prize and he served as architect of the structure built at Des Moines between 1871 and 1874.
Mr. Piquenard was also identified with the planning and erection of the Illinois Capitol at Springfield. In 1867 John C. Cochrane of Chicago won the first prize for his design in the competition on that building, and before the work was started Piquenard joined him in partnership, and assisted m the preparation of plans. Construction however was delayed, and at the time of Mr. Piquenard’s death only the foundations of the building had been laid.
