Newspaperman, since 1876, and in that year accompanied General Wade Hampton in his famous campaign through South Carolina. Went to Liberia with sailing ship full of negro emigrants, 1878, as correspondent Charleston, South Carolina., News and Courier. Exposed the horrors of mismanagement and inefficiency and broke up the enterprise.
Foreign same paper, disguised as a tramp, wrote up the convict camp iniquities, 1879, and did much to destroy the leasing system there.
