Background

ARNOLD, Alfred James was born on April 16, 1866 in Manchester. 3rd son of Alfred R. Arnold and Dumvilia, daughter of W. J. Taaffe, Company Dublin.

Education

Studied at private school. Corpus Christi College Cambridge. Enlisted 6th Dragoon Guards, 1886.

Career

Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 3rd Hussars, 1893. Joined Royal Niger Constabulary, 1894. Commanded same, 1895-1899.

Commanded troops throughout Niger Sudan campaign (Battles of Bida and Ilorin), 1897 (promoted Captain. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. Medal with clasp).

Promoted Major (half-pay), and Brevet Lieutenant - Colonel 1899 for service during recent operations on the Niger.

Decorated for command of troops throughout Niger Sudan campaign. Despatches and medal with clasp for service during Transvaal war, 1901. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order; retired; Inspecteur-General d’Exploitation Mozambique Company, East Africa, since 1899.

Membership

Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Club: Cavalry.
