In mercantile business till April 18, 1861, then in 17th Pennsylvania volumes as private and sergeant on upper Potomac until June 29, 1861, when discharged to accept appointment as captain 19th United States Infantry. Served as such with regiment and on staff of Major General George H. Thomas in Army of Cumberland through the war. Aide-de-camp to Major General Thomas, 1867, till his death, 1870.
Captain 13th United States Infantry, serving in Utah until 1874.
Major 22d United States Infantry, serving in Northern Michigan, Montana, in Pennsylvania against rioters, in Colorado, Indiana Ty. and Texas until 1882. Lieutenant colonel 16th United States Infantry, serving in Texas, in New York as superintendent of recruiting service, again in Texas and in Utah till 1888.
Colonel 9th United States Infantry, serving in Arizona till April 23, 1890, when retired for age. Brigadier general retired, 1904.
