Background
Rowse, Alfred' Leslie was born on December 4, 1903 in St. Austell, Cornwall.
(An early example of social history in depth: the examinat...)
An early example of social history in depth: the examination of a limited area, in this case the county of Cornwall, during a particular period--here, roughly 1450 to 1600. The great issue, in this study, is the English Reformation. As Dr. Rowse explains the purpose of the book: "My aim was to answer such questions as what was the Reformation when you came to study it under a microscope? What did it mean and what did it do? How did it work out and what were its effects upon the development of society?" But why Cornwall? Dr. Rowse delights in pointing out the differences between his native county and the rest of England, its Celtic individualism and its ancient legends and customs.

( The adventurers and merchants (as well as the poets and...)
The adventurers and merchants (as well as the poets and playwrights) of the Elizabethan age are legendary. This work by the eminent historian A. L. Rowse argues that, under Elizabeth I, England began its expansion and eventual enormous impact upon the world. In this era, England amplifed its ideas and influence on international affairs and it also expanded physically into Cornwall and Ireland, made first contact with Russia and the Canadian North, and opened trade with India and the Far East. This new edition includes an introduction by Michael Portillo. Â

(An intimate and learned biography of this Victorian write...)
An intimate and learned biography of this Victorian writer who left a lasting mark on British society. Arnold, whose books, articles and reports paved the way for the national system of secondary education through the Education Act of 1902, is seen in a new light by the author, who has loved Arnold's poetry from his schooldays. Dr. Rowse devotes himself to an exploration of Arnold's Cornish background and concludes that his Celtic temperament greatly influenced the poet and is reflected in his work. Originally published by Thames and Hudson in 1976.

(Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Tchaikovsky, Oscar Wilde...)
Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Tchaikovsky, Oscar Wilde, Ernst Rohm, Noel Coward - these men shared a sexual orientation that ran counter to mainstream society and defied their eras' ideas of biology. This analysis of these influential historical figures explores not only the links between creativity and sexual desire, but also how their awareness of their own sexual mores lent itself to the shaping of their genius.

(Sarajevo Self-Portrait presents the work and words of nin...)
Sarajevo Self-Portrait presents the work and words of nine photographers from a country in the aftermath of war. Created with what little film they had, in ruined darkrooms without electricity or running water, the photographs in this book are not only hard proof of the destruction and the suffering of this once-beautiful country but a salute to its indomitable spirit. For a country so brutally torn apart by racial conflict and hate, and for the rest of the world which largely ignored Bosnia's cries for help, Sarajevo Self-Portrait offers an authentic view of Bosnia in a completely new way - through the eyes of those actually living inside it.
