Career

Admitted to bar, 1854. In practice at Wilmington, North Carolina, since 1856. Clerk court of equity, 1858-1861.

Delegate Conservative Convention, 1860, which nominated Bell and Everett. Editor Wilmington (North Carolina) Daily Herald, 1860-1861. Lieutenant colonel 3d North Carolina Cavalry, C.S.A., 1862-1864.

Member 42d to 45th Congresses (1871-1879), 3d, later 6th, North Carolina District. Editor Charlotte Journal-Observer, 1881-1882. Presidential elector-at-large, 1888.
