Background

WALLACE, Alfred Russel was born on January 8, 1823 in Usk, Monmouthshire. Father a gentleman of Scottish ancestry.

Education

Studied at Hertford Grammar School. With elder brother a land surveyor and architect, 1838-1844. Doctor of Laws; Doctor of Civil Law.

Career

Went to the Amazon with Bates, 1848-1852. In Malay Archipelago, 1854 -62. Since occupied with natural history, social science, and scientific literature.

Lectured in America in 1886-S7.

President of Land Nationalisation Society. Order of Merit, occasional author
