Alfredo Alayza was born on August 16, 1950, in Lima, the capital of Peru. Lima is the country's principal city and the place where he studied law and where the firms and companies of his later career were based.
Alayza studied law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima, where he received the degree of abogado. The university was founded in 1917 with the support of the Catholic Church and is described as the oldest private institution of higher learning in Peru. Its first director was the priest Jorge Dintilhac, and it began its activities with schools of letters and law, so legal education formed part of its original structure.
The university received the status of a national institution in 1960 under Law 13417, a change that marked its formal place within the country's public system of recognized universities.
Alfredo Alayza practices law as a partner at Estudio Aurelio García Sayán, a firm established in Lima on July 12, 1978, with its headquarters in the Miraflores district. The firm is registered as a sociedad civil, a Peruvian form of civil partnership, and reports its activity as offices of lawyers.
Alayza's corporate career has also developed through board service in Peru's industrial and financial sectors. He has been a member of the board of NISA since 1977 and has served as its chairman since 1992. In 1996 he joined the boards of Inversiones en Concreto y Afines (INVECO) and UNICON, the latter founded in May 1996 and part of the concrete segment of the UNACEM group. He was a board member of Banco Internacional del Perú – Interbank from 2004 to 2015, and he joined the board of CELEPSA in 2005. CELEPSA's management includes the Marañón hydroelectric power plant, which began operations under its direction.
UNACEM traces its origins to 1916, when Compañía Peruana de Cementos Portland, the first Peruvian-owned cement producer, was founded. The group later faced the expropriation of Cementos Lima and Cemento Andino by a military government, and the two companies merged in 2012 to form UNACEM. Alayza has sat on the board of UNACEM Perú since 2021 and serves as vice chairman of the board of directors of Grupo UNACEM.
