ASHTON, Algernon Bennet Lang ton was born on December 9, 1859 in Durham. 12th c. of late Charles Ashton (d. 1862), principal tenor singer of the Cathedrals of Lincoln and Durham, and Diana Valentina Ashton (d.
1904), translator of over 400 German poems into English.

Career
Went to Leipzig, 1863, remaining there for seventeen years. Began to study music at age of seven under Franz Heinig. Later under Iwan Knorr.
Studied at Conservatoire of Leipzig under Reinecke, Jadassohn, E. F. Richter (composition and harmony), Papperitz and Coccius (pianoforte), 1875-1879. Also Joachim Raff at Frankfort, 1880-SI. Professor of the pianoforte at Royal College of Music, 1885-1910. Composer.
