Entered Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 1897. Promoted into Royal Fusiliers, 1901. Served South Africa, 1899 -1902 (despatches twice, Queen’s medal, 5 clasps, King’s medal, 2 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order).
Present at battles of Colenso, Spion Kop, Val Krantz, Peter’s Hill, and Bergendal. Served with 10th Soudanese, Egyptian Army, 1904-1906. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; Royal Fusiliers.
Spouse 1906, Mabel (d. 1907), daughter oflate William Burrows.
