He was the first and, to date, the only Iranian to win the gold medal in the Superheavy Weight of Freestyle Wrestling, which he won at the World Championship 1989 against Bruce Baumgartner. In addition to freestyle wrestling, he was a champion in varzesh-e bastani and had won the Pahlevan of Iran title and armband in Pahlevani traditional wrestling six times.
