Aliaksandr Ivanavich Balabanovich was born on April 25, 1965. He is Belarusian and pursued a scientific career in chemistry centered on polymeric materials, thermal degradation, combustion behavior, and fire-retardant systems.
Balabanovich studied chemistry at Belarusian State University, completing a Diploma in 1989 after beginning his university education in 1984. He continued his training at the same university and completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1992. His academic development provided the foundation for later research on polymer chemistry, pyrolysis, flame retardancy, and materials recycling.
Balabanovich began his professional research career in November 1992 as a junior researcher at the Research Institute for Chemical Problems, where he worked on chemical and materials-science problems involving polymeric systems. In January 1999 he advanced to a scientist position at the same institute and continued there through 2011. His research examined the combustion and thermal decomposition of polymers and polymer composites, including polyamides, polybutylene terephthalate, polystyrene blends, epoxy resins, and phosphorus-containing polyesters. He investigated halogen-free flame retardants, red phosphorus, melamine and its salts, organophosphorus compounds, cross-linking under irradiation, and the formation and composition of protective char. His work also addressed the pyrolysis of brominated epoxy resins and the recovery and recycling of waste from electrical and electronic equipment. Balabanovich collaborated internationally with researchers and institutions in Germany, Italy, and other countries, including the Hahn-Meitner Institute in Berlin, the University of Turin, the Karlsruhe research institutions, and the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden.
Developed and patented approaches to halogen-free flame retardancy of polymeric materials.
Developed and patented approaches for the dehalogenation of bromine-containing compounds.
Conducted research on the pyrolysis and thermal decomposition of phosphorus-, nitrogen-, and bromine-containing compounds.
Conducted research on recycling waste from electrical and electronic equipment.
Demonstrated the fire-retardant effects and degradation mechanisms of phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing additives in polymer systems, including polyamide, polybutylene terephthalate, high-impact polystyrene, and epoxy resins.
