Clej received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Bucharest in 1974. Six years later she earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university. In 1984, she was given a Master of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Also in 1986, Alina received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Comparative Literature from the same university.
Clej began her career as a teaching associate in English at the University of Bucharest in 1974 and had held the position for seven years. In 1983, she took a position of a teaching associate in French, Comparative Literature and Scandinavian at the University of California, Berkeley. Then in 1986, Alina became an assistant professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan. In 1992 she became an associate professor and then a professor of French and Comparative Literature at that university. Nowadays Clej is a professor emeritus of the Department of Romance Languages & Literatures at the University of Michigan.
