Born in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, Grim received an Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College in 1924 and an Bachelor of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1929. He was in private practice in Reading, Pennsylvania from 1929 to 1949. He chaired the Berkshire County, Pennsylvania Democratic Party Committee from 1940 to 1944.
