The invention in the late eighteenth century of lithography, or "writing on stone," reshaped the course of graphic arts. Some years later, the father of this world-changing technology, Alois Senefelder, published a description of the process. This English translation of the original German work, Vollständiges Lehrbuch der Steindruckerey, vividly describes Senefelder's struggles to develop and popularize the medium and the lithographic techniques employed in the process. The work is divided into two parts: the first presents a history of the invention and its different processes; the second provides practical instructions for its applicationthe varieties of stone, ink, instruments, paper, and presses used for different tasks, and the pitfalls to be avoided in working with these materials. An essential reference for graphic artists and students, the classic 1819 treatise remains the definitive work on this topic.

A book like this requires no preface; it makes its own way, supported by its contents. But the famous author deems that his acquaintance with me gave him the direct impulse for producing this work, which has been desired so long and from all sides; and he wishes that I shall say something about the history of its production. I seize the opportunity gladly to prove the esteem and the friendship that the talent of this honorable contemporary and fellow countryman, a talent combined with the utmost ambition and with childlike good nature and unselfishness, have inspired in me. Therefore the inventor, who, happily, still lives among us, has been urged from near and far to tell the story of his important, many-sided discovery, and to give instructions for its use, that is, to produce such a work as is before us now. But the artistic genius, full of his subject, would far rather work, experiment, strive, than write! Many times Herr Senefelder decided to set down how he happened on this art, how the successive steps of its development were reached, and at what point of development its various processes now stand; but always his ceaselessly striving spirit showed him something new that might be achieved, and forced him back again into his element, experimentation. The first object of my request has been without much result. Hardly a single voice has been raised to uncover the correct and the incorrect in the various stories with strictly historical accuracy, and thus to bring the truth to light, that lithography may not experience what our Klopstock sings: "Too oft in eternal night is cloaked the inventors great name

Alois Senefelder was born in Prague on November 6, 1771. He was the son of an actor at the Theatre Royal in Prague.
He was educated in Munich and won a scholarship to study law at Ingolstadt.
The death of his father in 1791 forced him to leave his studies to support his mother and eight siblings, and he became an actor and wrote a successful play Connoisseur of Girls.
He went to Munich in his youth and became an actor and playwright. Seeking a cheap method of producing copies of his plays, he found that if an acid solution of varnish were traced on an oil-covered stone, the ink would adhere to the resin solution only and give clear copies, a method of printing known as lithography. In 1796 he set up his first printshop in Munich, and another in 1799 in Offenbach, Bavaria. Lithographing of maps followed, and in 1809 he was named inspector of cartography for the royal Bavarian printer. In 1826 he made the first colored prints similar in appearance to oil paintings, and in 1833 he developed lithochromatics, a process to transfer oil paintings from stone to canvas, which made reasonably priced oil reproductions possible. His most important book is the comprehensive Manual of Lithography (1818). Senefelder died in Munich on Feburary 26, 1834.
