Between 1963 and 1966, he studied painting and original prints at the Paris School of Fine Arts.
In 1967 Altan Gürman entered the Department of Paintings as an assistant. In 1969 he actively took part in the establishment of the basic art education curriculum. In 1971, Gürman became an associate professor.
He performed his first solo exhibition in 1967 in Istanbul (German Cultural Center).
Altan Gurman was one of the rare artists who questioned accepted art understandings in both formal and intellectual sense. He used different techniques such as jigsaw, montage, printing, cutting and gluing, as well as using ready-made materials.
