Alvaro FLOREZ ESTRADA, economist. Corresp. Member, Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques, 1851.
FLOREZ ESTRADA, Alvaro was born in 1765 in Spain.
First distinguishing himself by his opposition to Napoleon and his
criticism of Spanish colonial administration, much of his writing was done whilst in exile. His Curso.. is the first systematic economic treatise by a Spaniard, and is largely based on Smith and Ricardo, but diverges from orthodoxy in advocating the common ownership of land. In La cuestión social.. he developed a fully-fledged programme for the nationalisation of land.
Subsequent Spanish economists built on his work, without, however, accepting his most original contributions. Civil Servant; Attorney General, Asturias, Spain, 1798. Chief Justice, Seville, 1813.
