Career
As a student at North Carolina State in the late 1910s and early 1920s, Fountain served as the editor of Technician, North Carolina State"s student newspaper and the co-author of the North Carolina State Alma Mater: "Where the winds of Dixie softly blow o"er the fields of Caroline, There stands ever cherished, North Carolina State, as thy honored shrine So lift your voices! Loudly sing from hill to oceanside! Our hearts ever hold you, North Carolina State in the folds of our love and pride." Fountain graduated from North Carolina State in 1922, later receiving an Master of Surgery in English literature from Columbia University and a Doctor of Philosophy in English from the George Peabody College. Fountain co-authored several English textbooks including The Engineer"s Manual of English (1943) and Manual of Technical Writing (1957).
