Background

Hawkins, Alvin was born on December 2, 1821 in Bath Company, Kentucky, United States. Son of John M. and Polly G. Hawkins.

Education

Family removed, 1826, to Maury Company, and, 1828, to Carroll Company, Tennessee. Did farm work and assisted his father in blacksmithing, but procured a good education. Taught school; read law.

Admitted to bar, 1843.

Career

Member general assembly, 1853. Elector on Bell and Everett ticket, 1860. Elected to Congress as a Unionist, 1862, but irregularities in election debarred him from seat.

United States district attorney, Western district, Tennessee, 1864-1865. Appointed United States consul-general at Havana, 1868. Soon thereafter resigned.

Judge Supreme Court Tennessee, 1865-1868, and 1869-1870. Governor Tennessee, 1881-1883. Defeated for ensuing term.
