Amadou was born on July 25, 1933, at Kaolack, the son of a village Chief.

He was educated at the Van Vollenhoven Lycee and the Dakar Law School before going to Paris to further his studies, getting degrees in law, politics and economics.
He returned to Dakar and started teaching at the Lycee Technique Maurice Delafosse between 1956-57, before joining the Shell company in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. In 1959 he became assistant to the Shell legal department before joining the Senegalese civil service rising to Director of Cabinet in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 1960, and a counsellor extraordinary at the Senegal Supreme Court between 1960-70.
He was appointed Managing Director of the Union Senegalaise de Banque in 1964 and a member of the financial commission of the Economic and Social Council of Senegal. He became President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Artisans of the Cap Vert Region in 1969.
