Amakusa Shir was born in 1620.
As head of the 40,000 Christian troops, he made Hara Castle as his headquarters. The castle fell in March,1638,due to lack of supplies. He was captured and beheaded. His head was gibetted at Nagasaki. The Shimabara Revolt, in which Roman Catholics in Amakuaa and Shimabara districts rose in arms, lasted from the winter of 1637 until the following year. Lord Shigemasa Matsukura kept the Japanese Christian under military control and Katsuie, his son, resorted to harsher measures to suppress Christianity, which led to the Christian rebellion. The Shogunate sent Shigemasa Itakura to Amakusa to suppress the rebellion but he iailed to accomplish his mission, whereupon Nobutsuna Matsudaira, a Minister of the Shogunate, was ordered to replace Itakura. With 12,400 troops Matsudaira succeeded in subduing the rebels after a protracted battle.
