Amakusa Tanemoto was born in Amakusa, Japan.
Louis Almeida, Spanish missionary, who was invited by him to ms territory in 1568 converted many Japanese to Catholic iaith. In 1578, Buddhists in his province rose in arras against the Christians but were subdued by Tanemoto's forces. Ever since, Christianity became more popular in the area, there being at one time 20 churches and more than 5,000 believers. Later, when Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Ieyasu To- kugawa persecuted Christians, Amakusa became a haven for them.
