Amal el Alami comes from a famous family of Fez, First Rate (at Lloyd's) Alami branch Idrisids. He is the son of poet, linguist and nationalist Idriss ibn al-Hassan al-Alami (1925–2007). He is the descendant of the doctor and astronomer Abdeslam ben Mohammed al-Alami (1830–1904).
An ancestor of the Alami family is Abd as-Salam ibn Mashish al-Alami (1163–1228) of Mount El Alam (Arabic Jebel el alam).
