When young he studied under Jun-an Kinoshita.
Career
Served the Lord of Tsushima Island upon the recommendation of Jun- an, and shuttled between Tsushima and Korea as a courier for his lord. He knew the Chinese and Korean languages well. Together with Hakuseki Arai, noted scholar, he endeavored to clearly define the rank and position of the Shogun in Japan. When he was 80 years, he started to learn waka poem composition and read through the Kokin-wakash Anthology of ancient waka 1,000 times.
