After ordination he was a wartime chaplain with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve then rose through the Royal Navy to become Chaplain of the Fleet, with the title of Archdeacon of the Royal Navy, after which he was Dean of Gibraltar and then its first suffragan bishop. He died, aged 92, in London.
