Background
Américo Ghioldi was born in Buenos Aires on 23 May 1899.
Américo Ghioldi was born in Buenos Aires on 23 May 1899.
Graduated from the normal school in 1920.
He became an editor of the Socialist periodicals La Vanguardia and Acción Socialista. In 1931 and 1936 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, where he became a leader of the Socialist delegation.
Ghioldi was a bitter critic of Juan Domingo Perón and was eventually forced into exile. He and other Socialists strongly attacked the undemocratic nature of the Peronist labor movement and condemned the violent and repressive measures used to force the ouster of anti-Peronist labor leaders.
Ghioldi returned to Argentina after Perón’s ouster in 1955 and again served as La Vanguardia s editor. However, the Socialists soon split into several factions and ceased to be a significant force in political or labor affairs. Always a violent anti-Peronist, Ghioldi served for a while as ambassador to Portugal in the government of General Jorge Videla in the late 1970s.
