Aczel was appointed at the University of Alaska as an associate professor of mathematics in 1982. He then took the same position at Bentley College (now Bentley University) in 1988. While working at the college, Aczel wrote books on mathematics and science, including Complete Business Statistics, Fermat's Last Theorem and Infinity. He served as a research fellow at the Boston University Center for Philosophy and History of Science from 2003. Aczel was interested in great nonfiction that tells a true story in an exciting, engaging way. He worked late into the night, almost every night. He composed entire chapters in his head, then wrote them down with very few revisions. He used no book outline, but rather let the story tell itself in the most natural way.
Aczel married Debra G. on October 4, 1984. The marriage produced a daughter Miriam.
