While a student at the Moscow Commercial Institute, started appearing in films as an actor under the name of Amo Bek. In 1915-1919 played romantic parts in films by E. Bauer, V. Gardin, P. Chardynin, and I. Perestiani. Returned to Georgia, and in 1921 headed the film section of Narkompros in Tbilisi.
Director and artistic director of Goskinprom (State Film Industry) in Georgia where he produced his first films, U Pozornogo Siolba and Propavshie Sokrovishcha, both 1924. His big success was Namus. 1926, followed by Zare, and a comedy, Shor i Shorshor, 1927.
With Armenkino and Azgoskino, made the first Armenian revolutionary films -KhasPush, 1928, and Dom па V,ulkane, 1929. One of the founders of the Vostokkino Studio. Several of his films were made there.
His major success was Pepo, 1935. Armenfilm Studio was renamed in 1965 in his honour.
