Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

clergyman composer educator writer
Amos Sutton Hayden was born on September 17, 1813, in Youngstown, Ohio, United States, the eighth and youngest child of Samuel and Sophia Hayden, who had emigrated to that place from Pennsylvania in 1804.
Amos spent his early days on a farm, and although his opportunity for schooling was limited he succeeded in getting a fair classical education.
Hayden's parents were devoted Baptists and he was an eager reader of religious books. In March 1828, under the preaching of Walter Scott, one of the leaders in the Disciples movement, he was converted. In 1840 became pastor of a church in Collamer, then Euclid, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. In 1858 Hayden was chosen principal of McNeely Normal School, Hopedale, Ohio, and also acted as pastor of the church in that town, but the following year he returned to Collamer, where the most of his remaining life was spent.
Hayden had a natural gift for music and was one of the earliest compilers of hymns for use in the churches of the Disciples. The Christian Hymn and Tune Book (1870) lists three previous works by him, Sacred Music, the Sacred Melodeon, and The Hymnist. The second of these is reviewed in the Millennial Harbinger of April 1849, which states that it contains approved pieces of old standard authors and many original compositions.
