Admitted to Kentucky bar, 1814. Editor, in charge of Argus of Western American, Frankfort, Kentucky, 1816. Largely responsible for Jackson’s victory in Kentucky.
4th auditor Treasury Department, 1829-1834. Member Jackson’s Kitchen Cabinet, speech writer and adviser to Jackson, 1828-1836. Postmaster general United States, 1835-1839.
Editor Extra Globe, Washington, District of Columbia, circa 1839. Established biweekly Kendall’s Expositor, 1841, weekly Union Democrat, 1842. An agent for collection of claims against United States Government, 1843.
Business agent for Samuel F.B. Morse, organized several telegraph companies, participated in operation. Financially responsible for erection of original, also of present Calvary Baptist Church, Washington, District of Columbia. Helped found Columbia Institution for Deaf and Dumb (now Gallaudet College), 1st president of the board of trustees.
