He was the son of Stephen Hadley (1777–1861) and Sarah Cushman Hadley (1780–1867). He graduated from Hamilton College. Then he studied law with Judge John P. Cushman in Troy, New York, and was admitted to the bar in 1843.
He was buried at the Claverack Cemetery in Claverack, New New York
He was a Whig member of the New York State Assembly in 1847 (Rensselaer Company). 1848 and 1849 (both Rensselaer Company, 1st Doctorate). And was Speaker in 1848 and 1849.
