"Touchdown" is the complete history of American football through its various stages of development, from its English ancestor, Rugby, to the present time. Amos Alonzo Stagg coached football for 35 years at the University of Chicago and then ended his career at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA.

Amos was born on August 16, 1862 at West Orange, New Jersey, United States, the son of Amos Lindsley Stagg and Eunice Pierson. His father was poor and had to supplement his income as a shoemaker by doing general labor. As soon as he was big enough, Stagg helped in these tasks, which included haying the salt meadows of Newark Bay.
In 1883, Stagg graduated from Orange High School, where the assistant principal, a Yale graduate, urged him to think seriously about going to college.
Unable to pass the Yale entrance examinations, he was persuaded by a well-to-do friend to come to Phillips Exeter Academy, which he attended for the spring term of 1884.
He did not play much football until after receiving the B. A. in 1888, but as a graduate student he played on Yale's undefeated and unscored-on team of 1888.
At the suggestion of Luther Gulick, he entered the International YMCA College at Springfield, Massachussets, in the fall of 1890 to study physical education.
After studies Stagg accepted an offer from his former Yale religion professor, William Rainey Harper, to become director of physical culture and athletics at the new University of Chicago, where Harper had become president. When excessive violence threatened football's existence in 1906, there was his change, to a more open running and passing game. No coach turned a more agile or inventive mind to the game during these years than did Stagg. Experts disagree on the origins of many aspects of college football, but few would argue with the proposition that Stagg was one of the leaders in most phases of the game.
From 1904 he was a member of the Intercollegiate Football Rules Committee. He also served on five American Olympic committees between 1906 and 1932, and coached the middle-distance runners in the 1924 Olympics. Stagg's inventiveness helps to explain why he was an outstanding coach. He did not recruit extensively, nor did he employ platoons of assistants. But in forty-one years at the University of Chicago, his teams had five undefeated seasons and won six Western Conference (Big Ten) titles; the 1905 team was ranked first in the country. Stagg had the ability to get the most out of limited material and to devise special tactics for special situations.
A notable example of the latter skill was the defense he prepared to use against Red Grange and the highly favored Illinois team in 1924. The game ended in a 21-21 tie and brought the last of Stagg's Big Ten titles. Stagg's coaching style was authoritarian.
Several of Stagg's players and assistant coaches, notably Fritz Crisler and Jesse Harper, went on to become successful head coaches.
George Halas, a founder of the National Football League, insists that Stagg revoked the varsity letters of Chicago athletes who turned professional.
His record there was not impressive--sixty wins, seventy-five losses, and seven ties--although during the war years, with military trainees at the college, he made it one of the strongest teams on the West Coast and was named coach of the year in 1943. He resigned after the 1946 season and became an offensive coach with his son Amos, Jr. , at Susquehanna College. He was elected to the Football Hall of Fame in 1951 both as a player and as a coach. In 1953, when Stella Stagg could no longer make the trip to Susquehanna from their home in California, he served as an advisory coach at Stockton Junior College.
In September 1960, at age ninety-eight, he finally conceded that it was time to quit. Stagg's last two decades were notable more for longevity than coaching achievements; it became increasingly remarkable for one so old to remain active in a young man's game.
He died at Stockton, California.
Amos Alonzo Stagg has been credited with creating dozens of plays, formations, and strategies that have become standard; including the T formation and the forward pass. Stagg was also responsible for originating the huddle, numbered uniforms, and lighted practice fields. He won approximately 250 games at Chicago, and more than 300 victories in fifty-seven years as a head coach. Despite his many victories and innovations, it may be argued that Stagg's greatest contribution was in holding up an ideal of what college football could and should be. He was a founder of the first athletic-letter club, which he organized in 1904. Upon reaching Chicago's mandatory retirement age, Stagg became head coach at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California, in 1933. He was a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 as both a player and coach and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959. The winner of the Big Ten Football Championship Game, started in 2011, receives the Stagg Championship Trophy, named in his honor.

He joined the Presbyterian church at seventeen.
He permitted no smoking, drinking, or profanity, and required rigorous training. Most of his players accepted this, and both respected and loved the "Old Man, " his nickname before he was forty.
His concept of the game is best seen in the code of the Order of the C, the first athletic-letter club, which he organized in 1904: a man must be amateur in spirit and act; he must be a gentleman and a sportsman, unwilling to win by cheating or unfair tactics; he must train hard and conscientiously, and willingly make personal sacrifice to produce the best that is in him, then give it freely and loyally to the university; he must have attained distinction as a varsity player or have done good-quality work and performed valuable service to the university over at least two years.
Stagg once said that love of country is the closest analogy to the feeling generated by college football. To Stagg, football was indissolubly tied up with college life; its basis was too purely emotional for it ever to be played successfully by professionals. He was, therefore, adamantly opposed to the emergence of professional football, which he saw as an attempt to exploit the colleges.
Quotations: "The day boys play with one eye on the university and the other on their professional futures, " he wrote, "the sport will become a moral liability to the college. .. Once the game becomes a nursery for professional gladiators, we shall have to plough up our football fields. "
On September 10, 1894, he married Stella Robertson, a member of the class of 1896 at Chicago. They had three children.
