Amy Stromsten received a Bachelor of Arts in 1963 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She received a certificate from Cooper Union School of Art in New York City in 1969 and took graduate seminars in the history of photography at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, in 1975-1976. She then received a Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1977.
Amy Stromsten has been an assistant professor since 1977 at Douglass College and the Mason Gross School of the Arts, both a part of Rutgers University. She was a visiting artist at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey, in the springs of 1976 and 1977, and was an instructor of photography and photo history at the New School for Social Research and Parsons School of Design, both in New York City, from 1973 to 1977. She also taught photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City (1972-1973) and directed the Art Center Program of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark (1975). In 1967 Amy Stromsten worked on art and public-relations projects for the New York City Department of Parks and Cultural Affairs Administration, and in 1974-1975 Amy Stromsten worked for Princeton Associates for Human Resources photographing a career education series. In 1973 she produced a documentary on Diane Arbus for WBAI radio in New York City.
