Educated at the Armenian seminary in Tbilisi, and at the Echmiadzin Theological Academy.
Joined the Bolshevik Party, 1915. After the February Revolution 1917, full-time Bolshevik organizer in the Caucasus (Echmiadzin, Tbilisi, Baku). During the Civil War, leader of underground communist organizations in Baku, arrested together with 26 Baku commissars who were shot, but Mikoian escaped unharmed.
From this moment until his death, earned a reputation as the most durable survivor in the communist leadership, surviving the Stalin purges, and remaining among the top leadership with Khrushchev and later Brezhnev. In the 1920s, party functionary in Nizhnii Novgorod (Gorkii), Rostov-on-Don, and the Northern Caucasus. Member of the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party from 1923.
Minister of Trade of the USSR, 1926-1930, Minister of Supplies, 193034, Minister of the Food Industry, 1934-1938. Member of the Politburo from 1935. Deputy Prime Minister of the USSR, 1937-1955, and Minister of Foreign Trade, 1938-1949.
During World War II, chairman of the Committee of Supplies for the Red Army. 1st Deputy Prime Minister 1955-1964. Minister of Trade, 1953-1955.
Close ally of Khrushchev, but it was he who rang Khrushchev at his Crimean holiday dacha, summoning him to come to Moscow to be dismissed. Promoted to head of state, 1964-1965. Wrote several volumes of memoirs on his career, stretching from Lenin to Brezhnev.
In 1988, his son Sergo was the first among the children of the Old Bolsheviks to acknowledge the guilt of their parents in the tragic events of Russian history in the 20th century.
