Worked in the apparatus of the political adviser in the Soviet Control Commission in Germany, 1949-1953, attached to the Soviet Embassy in the GDR. 1st secretary and councillor in the 3rd European Department of the MID (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), 1955-1958. Deputy head, later head of the Councillors’ Group at the MID, 1958-1959, and 1959-1965. Head of the 1st European Department of the MID (Belgium, Spain, Italy, Luxemburg, The Netherlands, Portugal, France and Switzerland), 1965-1971. Deputy Foreign Minister of the USSR, 1971-1986. 1st Deputy Foreign Minister of the USSR from May 1986.
