After the early death of his father was greatly influenced by his mother's brothers, the actors I. M. Moskvin and M. M. Tarkhanov. 1920 joined Vakhtangov’s Studio (1926 reorganized into Vakhtangov Theater). Roles: the Sage in Gozzi’s ’’Princess Turandot” (1922).

One of his most significant roles was the jocular French soldier Celestin in Slavin’s Interventsiya (Intervention) (1933). Vividly and acutely performed negative roles: Ivan Babichev in Olesha’s Zagovor chuvstv (Conspiracy of the Senses) (1929). Baron Nusengen after Balzac’s ’’Human Comedy" (1934).
