Laborer, then stoker on Black Sea merchant ships. From late 1915 served in Baltic Fleet. 1916 deserted to avoid arrest for revol activities.
March 1917 returned to Petrograd. June and July 1917 twice arrested for activities against Provisional Government. Escaped from jail and fled to Helsingfors.
October 1917 arrived in Petrograd with a sailors squad. Delegation, 2nd All-Russian Congress of Soviets. Although basically an anarchist, supported Bolsheviks.
Helped storm the Winter Palace, then fought counterrevol forces in Ukraine. January 1918 as commander of the guard at the Tavrida Palace, ordered Constituent Assembly deputy to leave the palace. January 1918 appointed member, Supreme Collegium for Rumanian and Russian Affairs and comissar, Danube Flotilla.
March 1918 commanded Birzul fortified region and fought in southern Ukraine. Summer 1918 regt commander, 16th Infantry Division. Early 1919 underground work in Odessa.
April 1919 chairman, Merchant Sailor’s Union. From May 1919 armored train commander.

The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
