In 1950 Anatoly Ivanovich Poletayev graduated from children's music school number 1 (class of A.P. Gerasimov), in 1954 - Voronezh Music College (department of A.N. Pilshchikov), in 1959 - Gnesins State Music and Pedagogical Institute, in 1967 - performing postgraduate studies at the Gorky Conservatory (headed by Professor N.Ya. Chaykin) and in 1976 completed his post-graduate studies at the Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory.
After graduation from the institute and post-graduate studies, Anatoly Poletayev was waiting for solo concerts and trips around the country. He quickly took a worthy place among the leading Soviet bayanists.
Currently he is the founder (1968), artistic director and chief conductor of the State Academic Russian Concert Orchestra "Boyan". Principal Conductor of the Osipov State Academic Folk Instruments Orchestra of Russia (1978-1979). Head of the Russian Song vocal folklore (since 1975) and Vesnyanka (since 1980) ensembles.
He is an active teacher. In 1960-1962 he taught at the Gnessin Institute. Professor at the Moscow State University of Culture. Vice-President of the International Slavic Academy.
Anatoly Ivanovich Poletayev is one of the last artists who was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR.
