Anatoly Mandelstam graduated from the Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University).
In 1941-1942, Anatoly Mandelstam worked in the Tajikistan National Museum. Participated in the Great Patriotic War. In 1951-1955, he was a scientific worker at the Institute of history of the Tajik SSR Academy of Sciences. Since 1956 Mandelstam worked at the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Archeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. At the same place he worked as a senior scientific worker since 1969.
The author of more than 100 publications on the ancient history of Middle Asia, Tuva, Pamir, Afghanistan, the history of pastoralist tribes of the south of Middle Asia, the problems of formation of the Tajik nation.
